August in Mandan gets treated like a shoulder season. School supplies on the counter, tomato plants going leggy, everyone half-packed for one last lake weekend. The calendar tells a different story. The city's own event listings show more happening between August 14 and August 29 than in the first two weekends of the month combined, and the summer's biggest closers are stacked into a fourteen-day window that most residents underestimate.

The Three Fridays at Dacotah Speedway
Dacotah Speedway is the through-line of the whole month. The 2026 schedule released by the track puts three consecutive Friday nights on the marquee, each one a different flavor of event, and Championship Night on August 21 is the season closer for weekly classes.

The one people forget to plan around is Saturday, August 8. That is the 2XRxr Monster Trucks doubleheader at the Speedway, two shows in one day, gates at 11:00 am for the 1:00 pm matinee and again at 5:00 pm for the 7:00 pm evening show, with freestyle motocross and kids' Powerwheel races between the trucks. If you have a household member under ten, this is the day you build the weekend around.
Worth knowing: the track lists August 8 on the weekly schedule as postponed, which means the Monster Trucks event replaces the regular Saturday night program. If you were counting on the weekly IMCA card that night, adjust.
Thursday Is a Night Again
For years, Thursdays in Mandan meant sprinklers and reruns. That has changed. The Starlight Cinema Series now runs Thursday evenings from 9 to 11 pm at Edgewood Mandan at Lakewood, and the August 27 screening is the last of the season. Bring a chair, park on the north side of the complex, and expect the temperature to drop faster than it does in July. Sunset on August 27 is roughly 8:37 pm in Mandan; the film starts as soon as the screen holds an image.
That same Thursday, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park hosts Lights Out – Stars Out from 9 to 11:30 pm. The park is seven miles south on Highway 1806, and it goes fully dark for the event. Bring a red-lens flashlight if you have one. If you do not, the park interpreters will have a small supply. This is the single best night of the summer to see the sky here without driving to Theodore Roosevelt.
The scheduling collision matters. You can do Starlight at Lakewood and get to the fort by 10:15 pm for the second half of the star program if you leave right after the credits and skip concessions. Anyone chasing both will be glad they knew that ahead of time.
The August 21 to 22 Weekend Is the Busiest of the Month
Circle it. This is the weekend where three separate scenes overlap:
- Championship Night at Dacotah Speedway, Friday the 21st, 7:00 pm. Season points settle here.
- Ride 4 Recovery 2026, Saturday the 22nd, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, staged out of 1406 2nd St NW. Expect motorcycle traffic on the north side and along the river road corridor for most of the afternoon.
- Live music at both anchor bars. All Aces plays The Broken Oar Friday and Saturday, 9:00 pm to 12:30 am. DISCONTENT plays The Drink at Lakewood Friday and Saturday, 9:00 pm to 1:00 am.
Sunday the 23rd cools things down with The Wedding Market at The Poppy Creative, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is a good soft landing after a loud two nights, and the parking lot clears out by early afternoon if you want to slip in and out.
If you host out-of-town family in late August, this is the weekend. You can pull off Speedway Friday, a bike-show-adjacent lunch downtown Saturday, and a low-key Sunday morning without leaving Morton County.
The Last Calls of the Summer Series
Three annual programs wind down in August, and the last-week versions of each tend to be the loosest and the most local.
The Dykshoorn Park concert series runs Monday through Thursday evenings, roughly 7 to 8 pm, from June through mid-August. Tuesday nights carry Mandan Lions Burgers in the Park, which is the one to catch if you have not been. Prices stay in Lions-club territory, the line moves, and the last two Tuesdays of the run are usually where the neighborhood shows up in force because everyone knows it will not be back until June.
Prairie West Golf Course hosts the DJGA Autumn Classic on Tuesday, August 25 at noon. This is a junior tournament, not an open event, but if you live near the course, expect a busier-than-average midweek afternoon and slower turn times if you are trying to grab nine after work.
The Flatland Precision Steel Challenge presented by TAG Firearms runs Saturday, August 29 at 2980 Lyons Rd, starting at 8:00 am. It is a competitive shooting event and it will not be on most residents' radar, but neighbors within earshot will want to know the date so it is not a surprise.
A Two-Weekend Itinerary for People Who Actually Live Here
For the household that wants to catch the good stuff without treating August like a job:
- Saturday, Aug 8, midday. Monster Trucks matinee at Dacotah Speedway. Home by 4:00 pm. Grill. Bed early.
- Thursday, Aug 13 or Aug 20. Starlight Cinema at Edgewood Mandan at Lakewood. Bring chairs and a hoodie.
- Friday, Aug 21, 7:00 pm. Championship Night at Dacotah Speedway.
- Saturday, Aug 22, afternoon. Watch the Ride 4 Recovery roll past, then live music at The Broken Oar or The Drink at Lakewood, dealer's choice.
- Thursday, Aug 27. Starlight Cinema at Lakewood for the finale, then Lights Out – Stars Out at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.
That is five nights of real, dated, local programming with no drive longer than fifteen minutes from most of Mandan.
What This Says About Mandan in Late Summer
The pattern behind all of this is worth naming. Mandan's civic infrastructure has been quietly extending the season. The Starlight Cinema Series at Lakewood was not on the calendar five years ago. Dacotah Speedway's Championship Night regularly draws capacity crowds, and the track's own accounting puts it among the highest weekly car counts in IMCA modified racing anywhere in the country. The Poppy Creative did not exist as a venue a decade back. Fort Abraham Lincoln has leaned into dark-sky programming in a way that ties the park to the neighborhoods on the north side of the river, not just to weekend tourists.
That matters for how life here is actually lived. The month between the state fair and the first day of school used to be the emptiest stretch of the summer. It is now one of the fullest, and the people who plan around it end up with a very different August than the ones who assume everything shuts down after the Fourth.
